Top 10 for 2010

by

Here are my Top 10 predictions for the political world in 2010:

#1: 2010 is a very bad year to be an incumbent – of any party.

#2: Pelosi hopes in vain that the American people have VERY short memories. The ensuing housecleaning boots her off the Speaker’s dias as Republicans re-claim the majority in the House.  (Even if the GOP doesn’t re-claim majority party status, Nancy is a goner.)

#3. The Utah legislature has a rough session.  In spite of opposition from a few stalwarts and a few hoping to strengthen re-election prospects, taxes will be raised.  As a result of the brutal session, a higher than usual number of reps and senators decide not to seek re-election, while moderates “find religion” and join the Patrick Henry caucus and tea party movements to shore up re-election prospects.

#4. Harry Reid loses his re-election bid, even though he holds many LDS firesides in Nevada right before the election. The Senate stays under Democrat control but has only a slim majority.

#5. Bob Bennett loses at convention to challenger Mike Lee, sending shock waves through the national political world.  Speculation starts immediately on Orrin Hatch’s plans for 2012.

#6. Jim Matheson successfully faces in intra-party challenger but in spite of local and national prognosticators who consider CD2 a “safe” seat for him, he loses to former legislator Morgan Philpot.

#7. The jockeying begins for Utah’s 4th Congressional seat. Oh wait. That has already happened.

#8. A watered-down version of the Senate health care bill eventually passes, making everyone on both sides of the aisle mad.

#9. Social media plays a HUGE role in campaigns – for the winners. Ignore at your peril.

#10. Sadly, I think we will see at least one terrorist attack on our own soil – even if it’s called a man-made disaster.

I disagree with part of #5.

In my opinion, it should read:

#5. Bob Bennett loses at convention to challenger Cherilyn Eagar, sending shock waves through the national political world. Since Senator Bennett didn’t make it past the first round of voting at convention, speculation starts immediately on Orrin Hatch’s plans for 2012.

Some of those predictions are about as safe as “the BCS will not invite a Mountain West Conference team to the championship Bowl game” or “Iron Man 2 will be profitable.” ;)

After reading some of today’s political news elsewhere, I came here looking for something positive. You give me hope, Holly. (except for #10, of course)

@John – all I can say is I call ‘em as I see ‘em – even if it makes me master of the obvious. :)

I think #3 is going to be extremely accurate. I also think those citizens who are calling for more conservative candidates are finding it easy to spot repubs who are dressing up and singing the conservative song half heartedly just to get reelected. It’s like singing “There is Sunshine in my Soul Today” in sacrament and never cracking a pleasant smile.

    2010. Amen.

I am very curious if the Tea Party will become an actual party in 2010. If so who emerges as the leader? The national GOP seems to be clueless and disorganized…at least it looks that way in NY-23 and the race for Ted Kennedy’s old seat.

I really like 5 and 6. ‘Cause everyone wants to be like Mike.

  7. John Says:

    1-Yes.
2-If the Dems keep the majority by one vote, Pelosi will remain Speaker.
    3-Pretty likely.
4-Does the Nevada GOP have to wait til 2012 to get rid of John Ensign?
5-Don’t know much about Mike Lee. Looking fwd to learning more.
6-This is the 1st year it feels like Matheson’s in trouble.
    7-Yup.
8-Every day that looks more in danger.
    9-Yep.
10-Even if it fails, the TSA will make it suck to fly even more.

  8. Charles Says:

Mike Lee is looking more like David Leavitt did last year.

  9. Utah State Republican Convention 2010 | Kristablack.net Says:

[...] because other exciting wins for the GOP are on the way if she’s right about those as well http://hollyonthehill.wordpress.com/2010/01/05/top-10-for-2010/.  So far, her record is outstanding and her endorsement of Tim Bridgewater was highly influential [...]
