Jim Matheson lies about his record

by

OK, I am seriously ticked off. Really. I mean really, really ticked off. It’s bad enough that Jim Matheson is trying to take DCCC talking points and turn them into attack ads, but at the Channel 4 debate with Chris Vanocur, when GOP challenger Morgan Philpot pointed out that Matheson voted for the deem-and-pass rule, he said – and I quote – “I did not, I did not. I voted no on that.”* Say WHAT? Congressman Matheson, your voting record says otherwise.

On March 18th, at 2:22 pm, you voted FOR deem-and-pass, aka the Slaughter rule which would allow Nancy Pelosi to “deem” that the bill “passed” without an actual vote. That same day, GOP Whip Eric Cantor proposed a resolution that would “disapprove of the “malfeasant manner” in which Speaker Pelosi and her deputies have moved on the healthcare bill.”

A story from the Hill reads in part:

The second-ranking Republican took to the House floor to read his privileged resolution aimed at Democratic leaders, who he claims have “conducted a calculated and coordinated attempt to willfully deceive the American people by embracing the ‘Slaughter Solution.”

Democratic leadership has willfully abused its power to chart a legislative course for the Senate health care bill that is deliberately calculated to obfuscate what the House will vote on,” Cantor said, calling the method “an illegitimate effort to confuse the public and thereby fraudulently insulate certain Representatives from accountability for their conduct of their offices

Need a reminder how you voted on Rep Cantor’s resolution, Congressman? A big fat no. Of course, that means a big fat yes for Nancy Pelosi and her job-killing agenda. Shame on you. Did you think We the People were too stupid to go check your record? Or just too stupid to figure out you’ll do whatever it takes to get elected – including lying on the air? Your recent tantrums have not endeared you to the voters of Utah and now you resort to flat-out lying? That is behavior unbecoming an elected official. Hopefully the voters of Utah’s 2nd Congressional district have finally woken up and will show that at the ballot box.

*To hear the lie about deem-and-pass, click the link above and go to 9 minutes and 45 seconds. Unbelievable.

As more and more Utahs realize that Matheson DID vote for Obamacare, on the very last vote, the vote that COUNTED, the vote that sent Obamacare to the Senate and then to the President for signature, to become the law of the land, they realize that Matheson does NOT represent Utah voters.

Morgan Philpot has pledged to support full repeal of Obamacare.

This should have been the main campaign issue from day one. Hopefully the word is getting out, a day before the election.

  2. Utah_1 Says:

For those that think Rep. Matheson helped fight the healthcare bill that passed, think again.

Look at what votes he made the last week prior that helped set up what happened Sunday March 21, 2010. For those that wanted the bill to pass, he voted against it, for those that wanted it to fail, he voted to suspend the rules so it could pass. Time to vote Rep. Matheson out.

He votes against a bill that he wouldn’t vote to repeal?

Put in Morgan Philpot. At least you get someone that would listen.

    http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2010/ROLL_100.asp

Look at roll call 129 and 130. Matheson voted to suspend the rules for Obamacare to pass.

  3. Utah_1 Says:

Matheson also lies about Morgan lying about Matheson’s record.

    re: Matheson 2 bills

I would like a list of bills personally sponsored by Matheson (not just co-sponsored by him) that have passed both houses and were signed by the President besides HR 1275 (2009) and HR 1442 (2009).

  4. Utah_1 Says:

Because Matheson is saying the 2 bills to law in 10 years isn’t true. I searched for actually bills that Matheson was sponsor (not just co-sponsor) that were signed by a US President into law.

    Start with
    http://thomas.loc.gov/home/LegislativeData.php?&n=BSS&c=111

    (111 th session)
2 bills signed in to law.
    HR 1275 2009
    HR 1442 2009

    (110) nothing signed into law
    (109) nothing signed into law
    (108) nothing signed into law
    (107) nothing signed into law

Now there were two honorable mentions.

A resolution that didn’t need to be signed into law (108) Hres 274 Honoring John Stockton passed.

One bill that didn’t go anywhere that somehow references one that did (107) HR 1190 to HR 1836.

So, other than 2 bills in 2009, Matheson hasn’t sponsored any bills that have been signed into law.

Matheson is distorting what Philpot is saying and then saying what Philpot isn’t saying is a lie.

I don’t like people that do that. Vote Philpot.

  5. lawrence Says:

The biggest falsehood from regular Democrats Matheson-Granato and the “new Democrats” Bob and Jim Bennett is their pleading for “civility” and “love of your fellow man.” They spend most of their time in below-the-belt distortions of their opponents. I particularly dislike them referring to mainstream Republicans who want to stop the insane Washington spending as “extremists.”

Polls show half of Utahns identify with the so-called Tea Party movement. In Utah, that’s just regular Republicans who believe in correct principles that happen to be listed in the Utah Republican Party platform.

Those people aren’t buying lies any more, from Matheson or anyone else.

  6. rmwarnick Says:

That’s politics, I guess. Going after Rep. Matheson for voting for a rule to enable passage of legislation that he twice voted against, health care “reform” that was the opposite of what everybody said it was.

The Affordable Care Act was worse than doing nothing because it’s designed to prolong the anti-consumer business model of the insurance companies, and prevent us from getting a public option, Medicare buy-in or anything else that would help resolve the health care crisis. OTOH it’s not anything like a “government takeover” of health care, in fact it’s the opposite– a takeover of government by corporate interests who now have a law forcing everyone to buy their crappy insurance!

  7. Steven Says:

So, rmwarnick says “that’s politics, I guess”. The fact that your congressman lied, and you are OK with that, says a lot about both of you. New Democratic Party Slogan – “Yeah, but that’s different”

  8. Michael Says:

Matheson’s stock response re: Obamacare has more holes than a box of Cheerios.

First, he claims he voted against it. A) He voted for “deem and pass” because he wanted it to pass. B) He only voted against it at the last minute, once it was clear his vote was not needed to pass it. Classic CYA vote.

Second, he keeps falling back on “Philpot wants to repeal the whole thing, including the pre-existing conditions part, which most Utahns support.” A) I’d like to see what poll he is relying on for that statement. B) If most Utahns support the pre-existing conditions stipulations in Obamacare, then they’ve been drinking the Progressive Kool-aid. If an insurance company cannot refuse to cover someone who is an automatic loss for the company, then non-governmental insurance companies will eventually cease to exist. The government should not be allowed to dictate what risks a company must take. Unless you LIKE communism.

Matheson is so disingenuous and insulting to his constituents. I cannot understand how he’s managed to fool the voters for this long. And I have to laugh at how he hasn’t the spine to say he won’t vote for Pelosi – a politician who has a 7% approval/68% disapproval rate among independents today. If he cannot commit to side with 93% of INDEPENDENTS, he is one sorry, characterless character.

  9. Don Says:

While I find politics abhorrent, and am irritated all the way around on “the norm” these days, that is a culmination of what we as people have let happen over the last 2 decades. I can’t blame any one in particular for the winding tactics they use to get things done. He is a Dem, if he doesn’t go with Dem votes and Dem majority, and the Dem speaker he will never get anything done when it is his turn to ask for votes or help. This is why partisan politics BLOWS and is NEVER in the best interest of the PEOPLE.

Personally I feel the only way to turn this around is to End Earmarks, End Lobbying, End Multiple Consecutive Terms, End Golden Fleece Benefits, to ACTUALLY Hold Politicians to some level of measure on their role as office holder, and tie it to their benefits and pay which would lessen the impact of corporate sponsored politics as people would be less likely to pass legislation that cripples consumers or competition if there were actually consequences

  10. Lisa Says:

I just wish I could vote him out.
I pass on as much as I can to those who can vote him out, though.

  11. Nancy Says:

Well, I wish I could vote him out as well. I was at the U.S. Capitol that weekend that Obamacare was passed. Mr. Matheson was in every strategic Dem meeting on the Hill that weekend. I went to his office to thank him for voting no, and he was no where in sight. I caught up with Rob Bishop to thank him and the vibe I got from Mr. Bishop was, don’t get to excited about Mr. Matheson voting no. It was not what he said, it was his body language. Mr. Matheson is not what he appears to be.

  12. tbayly Says:

I’ve already proudly voted (early) for Philpot. For those of you who wish you could vote out Matheson but don’t live in the district, why not volunteer to make calls for Morgan tomorrow to help get out the vote in his district? Turnout will be key…

  13. Tom Smith Says:

Matheson voted for all the parts of ObamaCare so that Nancy Pelosi would have the bill that she wanted. When the final vote for House bill he voted against it saying he did not like it. Yet he voted FOR all the parts that made up the health care bill. (He voted for it before he voted against it.)
Matheson wrote a letter to Pelosi and also stated on KSL to Doug Wright (Sept. 24) that he did not want to adjourn for the recess before voting to extend the tax cuts. Then he voted for adjournment without voting on tax cuts, or even the budget.
The Adjournment vote passed by one vote, Matheson’s.
He is Pelosi’s lap dog when it comes down to it.

  14. Utah_1 Says:

Jim Matheson votes with Nancy Pelosi when she needs the vote. There were 39 democrats that voted to stay and vote about the “Bush” Tax cuts. One more and they would not have left without discussing it. Yes, Matheson wrote a letter saying he wanted the cuts, but then he voted with Nancy Pelosi to dismiss and not. One vote would have made the difference. It did and it was Matheson voting with Nancy Pelosi, and not representing Utah.

  15. Adams Says:

I vote against him, before the rest can vote for him. Going to be close, it’s up to you, the Conservative Patriots.

  16. Nacilbupera Says:

What a disgrace of a politician to resort to breaking ninth commandment! Just as Matheson’s vote for the Slaughter Solution has forever tattooed my memory, I will also forever remember this last-minute election lie by Matheson and will seek Matheson’s ouster for however long it takes.

There is no question that Matheson voted for “deem and pass” aka “deem and scheme” aka “Slaughter Solution.” Holly, myself, national media, and many others have documented this vote.

I hope voters will wake up tomorrow and put an end to the lying now before we are forced to be shamed as a state for another two years by this Constitution-breaking (voting for unconstitutional “deem and pass”) liar.

You will notice that when that distant day comes that Matheson makes an actual public appearance in our state, I will not be shaking hands with him.

    Mr. Matheson: “You lie!”

  17. Karla Harding Says:

What about all the 232 meetings you supposedly missed according to Mathison’s advertizing? What about leaving the state during your term in congress? I would like your side of those accusations.

  18. Utah_1 Says:

Matheson voted for the rule change before he voted against it.

His votes rollcall 129, 130, and 159 did enough damage he could vote against the rest.

    re: Karla’s question
    http://hollyonthehill.wordpress.com/2010/11/01/no-mr-matheson-philpot-did-not-quit-on-the-job/

  19. Tom Smith Says:

Matheson makes somber statements that he does not like the “partisan bickering” in politics, yet he does nothing to stop his own party from participating in it. Three years ago when Congressman Pete Stark accused President Bush of blowing up innocent people and sending soldiers to Iraq to have their heads blown off for the president’s amusement, Matheson did nothing.
Matheson voted against censure for Stark, even though this was one of many horrid statements Stark has made.
Matheson’s vote against censure for Stark proves that Matheson is in favor of that terrible “partisan bickering” he says is such a problem in Washington, D.C.
Last week when President Obama called Americans “Enemies,” Matheson was mute. He could have proven his stand against “partisan bickering” and taken issue with the president.
Matheson has had many chances to make bold statements about “partisan bickering” but he has refused. He is lying about being against it.

  20. Yo Pumpkin Says:

You have blatantly lied about Matheson’s record and now your pissed? Go get a hot tub and a few beers and everything will be okay.

  21. Gary Says:

Pumpkin, it is very obvious that you don’t know how to read very well since you never checked out Matheson’s voting record, you are going by what the lier himself has said and want to believe that. You wouldn’t know the truth if it were to hit you in the head a dozen or more times and you are one of the kool aid drinking union members that will do anything to get all you think you are entitled to in your own mind. We are voting Matheson out of office today and you can live in your world of lies and deciet.

  22. Utah_1 Says:

    Yo Pumpkin,
Yes, Morgan can say that Matheson voted to change the rules so Obamacare passed and Matheson can say he didn’t vote for the Slaughter rule change and both be “telling the truth” – well kind of.

Again, look at Matheson’s votes from house rollcall 129 to 167.

    http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2010/ROLL_100.asp

What Matheson did is to show he is a two faced fake.

He voted with 129 and 130 to give Nancy Pelosi the authorization to, on March 21st, change the rules so Obamacare would pass.

Then he voted in 159 to bring the Slaughter rule/amendment to the floor
    .
When it was found that there were enough votes without Matheson, they re-voted, vote 160, and Matheson voted to not bring it to the floor.

Since Nancy had the votes, Matheson then voted against the healthcare system, and then afterwards said he would not vote to repeal it.

If you claim Matheson didn’t lie, then you have to believe and agree that he has purposely tried to willfully deceive the voters of Utah and he deliberately calculated to obfuscate the truth.

If that isn’t lying – what is?

  23. Adams Says:

It felt pretty good voting for Morgan, and against Phantom Jim an hour ago. Polls were fairly steady busy too. Time to cross your fingers. With a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence we mutually pledge to each other to Vote this Pelosi hand-puppet out!
