Congresswoman survives assassination attempt

Today, Representative Gabby Giffords, a blue-dog Democrat, was shot outside a grocery store in Arizona. She was holding her first constituent meeting since her re-election in November. Police in Tuscon believe she was the intended target of the gunman, who is suspected of acting with an accomplice. There are 6 confirmed dead, including a federal judge and a 9 year-old girl who was born on 9/11/01. Giffords has been married since 2007 to astronaut Mark Kelly. Kelly is training to be the commander of the next space shuttle mission, slated for April, and her brother-in-law is currently serving aboard the International Space Station.

The suspected shooter has been named as 22-year-old Jared Loughner. Authorities said they believed Loughner had sent out a video saying that he expected Saturday to be his last day. He had written on his MySpace page several “final thoughts” before today’s Meet and Greet.

In spite of being shot in the head, Rep Giffords has come through surgery and is reportedly responding to commands. While still listed in critical condition, Giffords’ Dr. has said he is optimistic about her recovery.

Capitol Hill police sent emails to each Congressional member and their staff asking them to take precautions as needed. The attempted assassination of a federal official may change the long-standing tradition of holding open public meetings – and that would compound today’s tragedy even more.

Representative Giffords was one of the Democrats that Sara Palin had on her website with her name in the cross hairs of a gun sight. Reportedly she took the site down a few hours after the shooting. Perhaps she finally got it through her thick skull that conservative hate speech and prejudice in the media has real life consequences after all.

Overheard in a Provo Pawn shop yesterday by the gun counter where a group of local rednecks were discussing the shooting, “Maybe those liberals will get the message now”. I wonder what message murdering 9 year old was meant to convey.

I am willing to wager that those good ol’ boys in the Provo pawn shop as well as the shooter all are regular listeners to Limbaugh, Hannity, and Beck as they spew their vitriolic hate speech over the airwaves.

Rep. Giffords scheduled public events where anyone could come and talk with her one-on-one for a few minutes. The only Utah politician I can recall doing that was former Governor Norm Bangerter. One crazed shooter may have put an end to this tradition.

  3. Fred Says:

Rep. Ron Bigelow consistently scheduled several “Town Hall” meetings during the session for the public and that tradition is expected to continue.

Here are some examples of the kind of speech that could be improved:

Perhaps she finally got it through her thick skull…

…all are regular listeners to Limbaugh, Hannity, and Beck as they spew their vitriolic hate speech over the airwaves.

Our job is keep our boot on the neck…

I want you to argue with them and get in their face…

    And of course, this:

If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun…

  6. Jerome Borden Says:

A couple of gun control groups such as VPC and AGS regularly gives Utah an F and I’ll take that as a complement.
